Why do airlines give out wet towels?

¬†According to The Sushi Economy pg 35, the other airlines copied JAL’s use of Japanese oshibori

    I always wondered why there were practically no napkins in Japan, I just never attributed it to the use of oshibori. I know now that oshibori is simply the hot (or cold) towel, but do you know why Japan has been using it for so long that others would copy it? Just wondering is all…
